3 Tips to Make 2017 Your Healthiest Year Ever

As the saying goes, “health is wealth.” Is your 2017 New Year’s resolution to improve your health or fitness? So many of us are chasing this goal this year, in our own unique way. Whether it is losing weight, quitting smoking, becoming more active, attaining improved sleep or minimizing stress, improved health can take many forms. Air Riderz is all about championing fitness and fun, so we thought we’d share our 3 tips to make 2017 your healthiest year ever.

1. Drink more water

Many people are dehydrated and don’t even know it! Consider that the average adult body is made up of 50-65% water. Why not give yourself what you’re made up of, and what you require for adequate functioning? Aim to drink roughly eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, and more if you are highly active or spending time in hot weather.

When you are properly hydrated you will feel better, look better and perform better. Common symptoms of dehydration include fatigue, dizziness and confusion. Aside from the damaging health implications of dehydration, these three signs that you haven’t consumed enough fluids will make it difficult – if not impossible – to stay on track with the health goals you’ve set for yourself.

2. Set up a support system

Surround yourself with friends and family as you embark on the journey to a healthier you. Once you share your goals with supportive loved ones, they will help keep you accountable and be a source of encouragement during challenging times.

Beware. Some people can find it challenging to adjust their attitude and habits when someone close to them decides to make a big change. Prepare yourself for people who will undermine your willpower. Most of the time, people like this are not trying to be unsupportive; they simply do not understand your level of seriousness. For example, if you’re trying to cut refined sugar out of your life and your aunt offers you a piece of chocolate cake and says “oh come on, one bite won’t hurt you!” Gently remind her of your goal, why it is important to you, and how eating the cake doesn’t fit within your action plan to make the goal a reality.

3. Remain determined

Choosing a New Year’s Resolution or new goal is the easy part. The rest requires mental, and often physical, toughness.

Regardless of the goal you are chasing in 2017, know that you will encounter especially challenging moments here and there. You may even experience small hiccups that “take you off course” for a short period of time – like committing to eating healthier, but eating nothing but junk food all weekend. Be realistic in your approach; have a plan for how you will handle bumps along the road. For instance, if your goal was to exercise three days per week and you have only been working out once per week for the last two weeks, spot the barrier that’s impeding your progress and remove it. Are the three days you selected to work out realistic, given your work and social obligations? If not, plot three different days in your calendar and try those instead.

Spot the problem and formulate a solution. The most important thing to remember is that if you slip up, pick yourself up and try again. Consistency is crucial to success!

“Great place for kids - don’t go on the climb if you are afraid of heights - they have cubbies for your jackets and boots and they also have complimentary smaller lockers for your purse or cellphone or keys and whatnot. If you are a support worker, you can let the front desk agent know and they will comp your ticket. They have a dodgeball court which makes you exhausted and 3 basketball nets which in my opinion is the greatest.”
